Display the insurance label on the car window is no longer mandatory

Law n. 32/2023, of 10 July 2023 amends Decree-Law no. 291/2007, making it no longer mandatory to display the car insurance label on vehicles whose use requires insurance and with regular parking in Portugal.

Once this obligation is lifted, it naturally ceases to be an administrative offence not to display the label, which was punishable by a fine of between €125.00 and €1,250.00.

The project that gave rise to Law n. 32/2023 came from the Liberal Initiative party, which based it on the fact that it was not proportional or justified to impose fines only for not displaying a paper, especially considering the financial difficulties that are felt in Portugal and that the information contained in the label was already known to the authorities, so it was not necessary for the label to be affixed to the vehicle for the authorities to confirm that the insurance had been contracted.

Law 32/2023 entered into force the day after its publication, i.e. today 11 July 2023.
